Orwell’s fictional work made an indelible mark on history and pop culture, as well as some of the terms including ‘Big Brother’, ‘Thought Police’ and ‘Room 101’ transcending the decades since the novel was first published in 1949. This was the final stage of his ‘reeducation’, where rats were placed in a cage over his head – his greatest fear. Protagonist Winston Smith, who was discovered to have broken the rules of the constrictive regime, was tortured and then taken to Room 101 to face “the worst thing in the world”. In the terrifying tale, citizens' every move and word is studied by the ‘Thought Police’ who are on the lookout for those that disobey ‘Big Brother’. I for one am looking forward to hearing and reading any further adventures and exploits the author may decide to steer the characters in to, along with any new characters and mysteries. I found myself picturing the characters and where they lived in my mind, so clearly I felt I'd been there hi should she wish to. Please, help us by contributing The Books x. This celebrates and explores the 13 Treasures Trilogy and all related material. We’re a collaborative community website that anyone, including you, can edit. The author and the narrator have managed to bring these characters alive. Welcome to the 13 Treasures/Curses/Secrets Wiki, exploring the work of Michelle Harrison. The author has done such an amazing job that you find yourself rooting for these imaginary characters to come out on top. I don't want to spoil the story plot for anyone so all I'll say is it's a story that will make you laugh and make you cry. it's got everything you need for you to escape realism for a while, forget about your worries and slip into an exciting fantasy world filled with faries, Goblins, magic, mystery and suspense. I don't normally write reviews but this book and the previous 3 books in this collection have been an absolute pleasure to listen to. Fantastic story/ series definitely worth a listen With lots of twists and turns, she manages to really capture a feeling of both passion and suspense in equal measure, making it work for her. It’s a testament to her skills as an author that she says everything that she wants to say, while keeping her readers continually glued to the page. Getting to the heart of what she wants to say almost immediately, she really brings her stories to life for the reader. Setting herself apart from other writers within her field, she inhabits a space that is entirely idiosyncratic to her and her alone. Her fun and entertaining perspective has really managed to create a style that has become very much its own over the years. Combining elements of thriller with passion and romance, many of her books are also LGBT friendly, typically looking at the relationships between men. An American author, Sloane Kennedy is extremely well regarded for her unique and innovative take on the romance genre. However, the well-developed and convincing bond between Dana and Kai and the successful balance between action and introspection give the familiar theme added energy. Although the mystery of a unicorn's treasure adds a glossy twist to the novel and Kai as guardian angel/ghost diverges from the typical love interest, there are few new elements in this oft-told story of bold, magical teen girl fighting not only for the boy she loves but also to prove her strength and worth. Even while her own power grows under the tutelage of the Maestro, Dana cannot quell her misgivings about his true motives as she also struggles to reconcile her impossible love for the incorporeal Kai. A rare opportunity to study as the apprentice of the powerful but distant Maestro leads Dana to a mysterious tower where she spends the next several years, accompanied by Kai. Comfort becomes something more when Dana eventually discovers, as she and Kai become adolescents, that her growing romantic love for him is reciprocated. In this fantasy imported from Spain, Dana and Kai have been best friends since they were six the fact that no one else can see Kai is of little concern to Dana, who finds comfort in his friendship. Other works, also, with characteristic deprecation, centre on Canadian history and identity, such as I Was a Teen-Age Katima Victim: A Canadian Odyssey (1998) and Bastards and Boneheads: Canada's Glorious Leaders, Past and Present (1999). With irreverence and irony, Ferguson focuses on ideas and ideals that often make Canada the envy of the world, but somehow fail to be noticed by Canadians themselves. These begin with Why I Hate Canadians (1997), published on Ferguson's return to Canada, culturally disoriented after teaching English in Japan for five years. Will Ferguson's publications include a number of books addressing Canadian history and identity, in tones blending the informative and the satiric. His narratives describe historic, human and geographic landscapes, expressing the shifting nature of humanity in genres as diverse as the novel, the essay, travelogue and memoir, and in his reflections on Canadian identity. Ferguson's writing encompasses the whole of human experience. Will Ferguson was educated in western Canada and graduated with a BFA from York University. |
